6th April 1859

From the Journal of Lt. Lempriere, RE, on board the Thames City on route to British Columbia.

6th Wednesday Wind changeable and weather foggy - Pork very bad at 4 bells, I got it exchanged.

506 miles from Cape Flattery; the people between decks seemed anything but pleased when I announced the distance there and found that we were 50 miles further off than the day before -

Notes: The rations on board included salt pork in barrels.  For the pork to have gone bad, it must have been very bad indeed.

After being on board the Thames City for over 6 months, only touching the shore once 4 months before, it is hardly surprising that they might have been a bit put off.
