A Scheme for Victualling in the Navy - 1850
(sanctioned by Her majesty's Order in Council of the 24th Sept., 1850)

There shall be allowed to every person serving in Her Majesty's Navy, the following daily quantities of provisions, viz:

Biscuit 1 lb.
Spirits 1/2 gill (1/4 cup)
Fresh Meat 1 lb.
vegetables 1/2 lb.
Sugar 1 3/4 oz.
Chocolate 1 oz.
Tea 1/4 oz.

When Freash meats and Vegatables cannot be issued, there shall be allowed in liu thereof:

 Every alternate day -

Salt Pork 1 lb.
Peas 1/2 pint

or alternately when Salt Pork and peas are not issued

Salt Beef 1 lb.
Flour 3/4 lb. (or Suet 1/2 lb. or Raisins 1 lb. or Currants 1/2 lb.)

or -

Preserved Meat 3/4 lb.
Preserved Potato or Rice (or half of each) 1/4 lb.

And weekly, whether Fresh or Salt of Preserved Meat be issued:

Oatmeal 1/4 pint
Mustard 1/2 oz.
Pepper 1/4 oz.
Vinegar 1/4 pint (for occasional use when required)

 In case it should be found necessary to issue substitutes for any of the foregoing species of Provisions, the following:

Soft bread 1/4 lb.
Rice 1 lb.
Sago* 1 lb.
Flour 1lb.

 Are to be considered equal to 1 lb of Bscuit.  Also:

 Wine 1/2 pint
Strong beer 1 quart
Small Beer 1/2 Gallon

 Are to be considered equal to Spirits 1/2 gill.  Also:

Coffee 1 oz.
Cocoa 1 oz.
Chocolate 1 oz.
Tea 1/4 oz.

To be considered equal to each other.  Also:

Sago 1 lb.
Scotch barley 1 lb.
Peal barley 1 lb.
Rice 1 lb.

are to be considered equal to each other.  Also:

 Rice 1 lb.
Calavances 1 pint
Dholl 1 pint
Split peas 1/2 pint

 are to be considered equal to Peas 1 pint.  Also:

 Rice 1 lb. is to be considered equal to Oatmeal 1 quart

 Onions 1/4 lb. or Leeks 1/4 lb. are to be considered equal to 1 lb of other Vegetables
